MAAT Series
(2016-2020)
The series MAAT is an open series of works depicting various architectural elements photographed close up, so they are taken out of their context to provide abstract shapes and patterns. The series is kept in black and white to further abstract and emphasise the simplicity when looked at such details closely.
Elephant & Castle I (2016) is a work about architectural features of the Michael Faraday Memorial at Elephant Square in Elephant and Castle, London, England, which was designed by architect Rodney Gordon and built in 1961. The architect originally designed the cladding in glass, but considerations regarding vandalism did result in the design being modified and the cladding constructed in metal instead. Elephant & Castle I is a close-up shot of some of these cladding elements.
Baker Street I (2019) represents the facade detail of a building on Baker Street in London.
Bermondsey Square I (2019) depicts details of the bike store at Bermondsey Square in London, England. It was designed by architect Sarah Wigglesworth and built in 2008 and adds significantly to the appearance of Bermondsey Square.
MAAT I (2020) shows parts of architectural elements of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon, Portugal, which was designed by architect Amanda Levete, and finished in 2016. The work shows parts of the almost 15,000 crackle-glazed three-dimensional tiles making up the skin of the museum building.
Holloway Road I (2020) is the latest work in this series. It depicts facade elements of the Graduate Centre building of the London Metropolitan University on Holloway Road, London. The building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and built between 2001 and 2003. A link to the project website can be found here.
