The Making of my Natural Steel Frames
Each natural steel frame I use for my limited edition artwork is individually hand crafted in Germany. The individual sides of the frames are cut to length from untreated steel profiles and then welded to make a rough steel frame. The welding seams then have to be ground off to allow for an almost invisible corner connection.
Each frame needs fixation bars for the print, mount board, mat board and glass sheets on all sides, removable for easy access which is screwed onto the main frame body.
Eventually, after a multi-step sanding process, the frame receives its smooth surface which is a necessary basis for the last step, the browning. In this last step a chemical substance is applied to the metal to achieve a colouring that—depending on the applied chemical—can range from brown to a greyish black.
